Art Program News
This past Tuesday, Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley visited the Club to recognize those young artists who created paintings that will be used in the Victim Compensation and Assistance Division calendar. Congratulations to the following Club members who were presented certificates of Recognition by the Attorney General: Melanie Almeida, Isabel Alvarado, Michelle Beazley, Christian Canales, Hannah Crisman, Adrianna Davis, Dayna Finnigan, Kevin Zarnoch, Elizabeth Lewis, Vladimir Mesidor, Sierra Moore, Orla O’Driscoll, Kaitlin Tran, Sachi Vicente and Elia Watler. We would also like to congratulate Mason Brooks, Janete Weathers and Rachel Joyce, each of whom has been selected as a finalist in Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s Imagemaker Contest and will have entries from their Photography class sent to the regional exhibit being held in Vergennes, VT in May. May Program Highlights
The month of May will offer a number of special activities throughout all program areas. In our Social Recreation program for ages 6 to 12 our weekly Girls Group, Torch Club and Open Cook will continue to meet weekly and we will offer field trips to Mini-Golf (5/19) and the Movies (5/26). In our Athletic program the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League (I/SBL) will continue playing games three nights a week while the 4-team Co-ed Soccer League will continue games on Fridays. Our All-Star Soccer team will play games against Salem, MA (5/10), Nashua, NH (5/12), South Boston (5/19) and Waltham (5/26) while our All-Star Flag Football team will play games against Salem, MA (5/17) and Brockton (5/26). In our Education program the Homework Help program will remain on the schedule for Mondays through Thursdays (2:30-7:00 p.m.) through the month while our weekly group clubs: Icky, Sticky & Goo Science (Wednesdays), PicoCricket Inventions (Thursdays) and Scratch Computer Animation (Fridays) will continue to meet weekly. For our High School Seniors needing any last-minute assistance with college applications and/or financial aid please see Emily. In our Teen program we will be attending the N.E. Women’s Leadership Awards ceremony at the Seaport World Trade Center (5/6), taking part in the Mother’s Walk for Peace (5/9), hosting Career Prep Summer Jobs processing (5/15), the Munch & Mingle (5/19) and a Girls/Boys Group Car Wash Fundraiser (5/22). In addition, the members of the Keystone Club will hold their Annual Spring Clean-up (5/8) and a Yard Sale/Car Wash Fundraiser (5/22) and the Teen Center will also serve as the host site for a Project B.I.N.D. Town Hall Meeting, a forum for parents and community members to help create programming for youth with special needs. In the Arts program our weekday Fine Arts classes for ages 6 to 12 (painting, illustration, sculpture, girls/boys art & open art) and evening classes (photography, ballet and teen arts) will continue to meet weekly through the end of the month. In the Music Clubhouse there will be drop-in sessions for ages 10 & older and limited individual and small group lessons. At our Denney Center Clubhouse located in Harbor Point we will begin accepting registrations for the summer program (5/3), host an intra-Club Talent Show (5/14), the Munch & Mingle (5/19), Parents Forum (5/20), a 3-day retreat to Cape Cod (5/21 – 5/23) and an intra-Club Teen Field Day at U-Mass Boston (5/28). In addition, the All-Star Soccer Team from the Denney Center will play games against the Salem, MA (5/3), Nashua, NH (5/7) and South Boston (5/12) Clubs. Our Patriots Kids Café program, offered in partnership with The Greater Boston Food Bank and Feeding America, will continue to serve hot, nutritious meals to members weekday afternoons at 5:00. In addition, the current 5-week “Rainbow Buffet” nutrition education class will conclude on 5/11. In our Aquatic program the 6-team Intramural Swim League will run through the month with weekday practices for each team and meets held on Saturday afternoons. As an added bonus, the more experienced swimmers from the league will attend a Relay Carnival at the Watertown Club (5/8) and host the Watertown and West End House Clubs for a meet (5/21). In addition, the Spring session of Swim Lessons will continue to meet weekly before wrapping up near the end of the month.
