August Program Highlights
The month of August will close out the summer program with a bang as we have many exciting activities planned for all age groups. In our Social Recreation program the second of our 3-week sessions will conclude on 8/14 with an Olympic Day. Similar to the ending of session one, members and their teams will compete in a series of events in all program areas. The program will also offer off-site bus trips to Water Country (8/4), the Boston Harbor Islands (8/7), the Aquarium (8/7) and Sturbridge Village (8/10). We will also be partnering with Officer, Mark Buchanan of the Boston Police Department, Area C-11, to host the Junior Police Academy (8/10 to 8/14) and look forward to a return visit from the Smile Initiative (8/13) to provide on-site dental services. In our Athletic program look for championship games in all three divisions of the 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League with the Girls on 8/11, Intermediate Boys on 8/15 as well as the Senior Boys on 8/15. In addition, three lucky members will attend baseball camp in Maryland through our partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation (8/24 to 8/28). In our Aquatic program the Summer Swim Team will close out the season on 8/13 with a meet against the Watertown Boys and Girls Club followed by an outdoor barbecue for swimmers and their parents. In our Education program members will take their third and final trip to Land’s Sake Farm (8/13), continue the Axis Learning curriculum in partnership with Associated Grantmakers Summer Fund and we will host our 4th Annual Teen Summer Career Fair on 8/5. On this night 30+ professionals will be on hand to speak to teens about their career choices and to offer advice on how best our members can attain their goals. In the Arts Department members of the day program will continue to rotate into Fine Arts classes and take part in Music instruction sessions in our new Music Clubhouse. At our Denney Center Unit, located in Harbor Point, we will be taking bus trips to the Davis Mega-Maze on 8/7 and the Museum of Science on 8/13, as well as hosting our end of Summer Field Day on 8/14. In our Teen program we will continue our Safe Summer Streets program through 8/15 with special events to include a Mothers & Mentors Dinner (8/12) and our Annual Semi-Formal Dance (8/14). This date will also serve as the completion of our Career Launch program for the summer as 120+ teens will conclude their employment assignments. So while on-site programming (excluding our Childcare programs) will conclude on 8/15 that does not mean the summer is over just yet. On 8/17, 150 members will board buses to take part in the 4th Annual Camp Northbound trip for a week of overnight camping in Maine. While there members will take part in water sports, hikes, athletics, character building activities, arts and much more. The following week, from 8/24 to 8/28, 86 youth will travel to Walt Disney World in Florida on our 18th Annual Disney World trip. Lastly, on 8/28, the Pre-School program will host a graduation ceremony for all of our graduates and their families. Parents, please note that outside of our year-round Childcare programs for children ages 2 months to 12 years, the Club will re-open to drop-in membership on 9/7. Rodman Ride For Kids Event Approaching
The Boys and Girls Club, along with other collaborating youth serving agencies, will be participating in the approaching Rodman Ride for Kids. The Ride is a 25, 50 or 100 mile bike ride through the towns of Southeastern, Massachusetts which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26th. As the event approaches, the Boys and Girls Club is actively seeking teams of riders (5 riders constitute a team), individual riders, sponsors and volunteers. 100% of all funds raised go directly to the agencies. In addition, funds raised from our sponsors and riders will be matched with a 15% grant through the Ride. Last year’s event was a tremendous success and a fun day for everyone involved.
