December Program Highlights
The month of December will be a busy one, with a large number of special events in all program areas. In our Athletic program all four divisions of the 18-team Intramural Floor Hockey program will conclude with championship games as follows: 10&U Boys (12/10), 10&U Girls (12/11), 18&U Girls (12/11) and 14&U Boys (12/12). Other dates on the schedule include the Junior Flag Football Super Bowl (12/5), the Fall Gymnastics Recital (12/7) and Registration for the Winter Athletics program (12/12) which will include Basketball (Clinic & Intramural programs), Gymnastics Judo and Yoga. In our Aquatic program the Fall session of Swim Lessons will wind down early in the month. We will begin accepting re-registrations for the Winter session beginning the week of 12/7. The Marr-lin Swim Team will continue their dual-meet schedule with meets against the Waltham Club (12/5), the Chelsea and South Boston Clubs (12/11) and the Woburn Club (12/19). The team will also attend the Nashua Pentathlon Meet on 12/13. At our Walter Denney Clubhouse located in Harbor Point we will host a teen Munch & Mingle (12/2), take teen members to a College Prep workshop with U-Mass Boston (12/3), hold a Parents Forum (12/10), host the Patriot’s Kids Café Christmas Dinner (12/11), offer a trip to the Movies (12/11) and wrap up the first semester of the U-Mass Tutoring program (12/18). In our Social Recreation program we will offer a trip to the Frog Pond for Ice Skating (12/5), invite 40 members to the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation Christmas Party (12/13) and, host a group of 25 at Christmas at the Pops, where our members will attend a Christmas Party at the Copley Fairmont Hotel, followed by a performance of the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. Later in the month, on 12/24 we will host members ages 6 to 12 at our Annual Christmas Parties with ages 6 to 9 attending from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. and ages 10-12 attending from 11:30 – 1:00 p.m. Our Patriot’s Kids Café, offered in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank and Feeding America, will offer a hot, nutritious meal weeknights at 5:00 p.m. During December we will host a special Christmas Dinner (12/8) and offer an afternoon meal during the school break on days the Club is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Our Education program will offer a College Tour of Northeastern University and Bunker Hill Community College (12/4) and take members on a trip to the Harvard Museum of Natural History (12/9). Homework Help will continue right up through the school break and One-to-One Tutoring partners will continue to meet weekly. In our Arts program our Fall session of Fine Arts classes will wind down before we take registrations for the Winter session of classes on 12/13. Other events include the Drama Club performance of “Ebony Scrooge†on 12/15 at our Denney Clubhouse and a trip to see “The Nutcracker†at the Opera House in partnership with the Marilyn Rodman Theater for Kids program. In addition, the Music Clubhouse will continue to offer drop-in, individual and small group Music instruction. Lastly, in our Teen program look for trips to an Open Mic Night at the West End House Boys and Girls Club (12/4) and Ice Skating (12/11). Our group clubs (Girls Group, Boys Group, Teen Magazine) will continue to meet weekly and we will host our Teen Christmas Party on 12/18. Meanwhile, the Teen members of the Keystone Club will be volunteering at the Celebration of Giving (12/4), hosting a Christmas Social (12/13), inviting Seniors from the Kit Clark Senior Center to our Annual Holiday Dinner (12/17) and volunteering at Christmas in the City (12/18). All-Star Floor Hockey Teams
Both of the Club’s All-Star Floor Hockey teams have completed regular season play and have advanced into the post-season tournament. The 14 & under Girls, who are looking to repeat as league champions, finished their season at 6-1 after a 7-0 win over the South Boston Boys and Girls Club. Leading the way on offense were Jennifer Tavares (2 goals), Natalie O’Donovan (1 goal), Jailene Peguero (1 goal), Jessica Teixeira (1 goal), Olivia McGrath (1 goal) and Cadejia Matthews (1 goal). The 13 & under Boys, also looking to repeat as league champions, suffered their first loss of the season, 12-4, at the hands of the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club. Offensively, the Club Stars were led by James McDonnell (2 goals), Walter Dew-Hollis (1 goal) and William McMahon (1 goal). Good luck to both teams in the play-offs. As the Floor Hockey season winds down, the All-Star Basketball season is gearing up with four teams practicing in preparation for league play to begin in January.
