Intramural Floor Hockey Play-offs
The 18-team Intramural Floor Hockey program has concluded the play-off tournaments in all four divisions of play, crowning a new set of champions for the 2009 season. In the Boys 10 & under division the play-offs began with two quarter-final games, the first of which saw the Avalanche, behind Jacob Clark (1 goal) and Owen Gormley (1 goal) defeat the Red Wings 2-0. In the second game the Whalers defeated the Sharks 5-3. Brendan White (5 goals) and Eben Butler (3 goals) provided the offense for the Whalers and Sharks respectively. A week later the semi-final games were held with the opener seeing the Sabres make a third period comeback to defeat the Avalanche 7-5. Charlie Curd (3 goals), Jared McLeod (3 goals) and Oliver Culliton (1 goal) led the Sabres while the Avalanche were led by Freddie DePina (3 goals) and Owen Gormley (2 goals). In the second game the Maple Leafs advanced with a 5-4 win over the Whalers. Sam Mastrogiacomo (4 goals) and Mcklein Henry (1 goal) led the Maple Leafs while Brendan White (4 goals) did all the scoring for the Whalers. In the championship game the Sabres got a late goal to pull out a 3-2 win over the Maple Leafs. Leading the way for the Sabres were Oliver Culliton (2 goals) and Aiden Sullivan (1 goal) while Sam Mastrogiacomo (1 goal) and Octavius Nunes (1 goal) led the Maple Leaf attack. In the Girls 10 & under division the first of two semi-final games saw the Oilers, behind the scoring of Armani Monteiro (1 goal), Ednilda Lopes-Hunt (1 goal), Casey MacKinnon (1 goal) and Denise O’Donovan (1 goal) defeat the Black Hawks 4-3. Leading the way for the Black Hawks were Juliette Silva (1 goal), Ella Flaherty (1 goal) and Mia Nunes (1 goal). In the second game the Bruins advanced with a win over the North Stars, setting up a championship match between the Oilers and Bruins. This game went back and forth before the Oilers scored two late goals to pull out a 6-4 victory. Sarah O’Donovan (3 goals), Casey MacKinnon (2 goals) and Ednilda Lopes-Hunt (1 goal) led the offense for the Oilers while Tyalie Campbell (3 goals) and Michelle Beazley (1 goal) scored for the Bruins. In the Girls 18 & under division the first of two semi-final games saw the Lightning defeat the Flames 6-4. Jessica Teixeira (3 goals), Natalie O’Donovan (2 goals) and Olivia McGrath (1 goal) led the offense for the Lightning while Noreen Walsh (2 goals), Allison Gaylord (1 goal) and Emily Gaylord (1 goal) scored for the Flames. In the late game the Blues opened up and early lead and never looked back on their way to a 6-1 win over the Devils. It was Christina Lafferty (3 goals), Cadejia Matthews (2 goals) and Mary Reinhalter (1 goal) leading the way for the Blues while the Devils were led by Niamh Kerr (1 goal). The championship game for this division needed overtime for the Blues to pull out a 6-5 victory. Christina Lafferty (3 goals), Jennifer Tavares (2 goal) and Cadejia Matthews (1 goal) led the offense for the Blues while the Lightning were led by Natalie O’Donovan (2 goals), Rebecca McNealy (2 goals) and Jessica Teixeira (1 goal). Finally, in the 14 & under Boys division the early semi-final game had the Canadiens besting the Flyers 7-2. Evandro Teixeira (3 goals), Sam Mastrogiacomo (2 goals), Jake Mastrogiacomo (1 goal) and Martin Chomicki (1 goal) led the Canadiens while the Flyers were led by Maxwell Spinola (1 goal) and Edison Vazquez (1 goal). In the second game the Capitals saved almost all of their offense for the final period to overtake the Islanders 7-5. Jack O’Sullivan (3 goals), Alex Finfer (2 goals), Emoni Vicente (1 goal) and Malik James (1 goal) led the Capitals while Brendan Woods (2 goals), Geraldo Puente (1 goal), Brian Anton (1 goal) and Pedro Lopes (1 goal) led the Islanders. In the championship game the Canadiens opened up an early lead then had to hang on for a well-played 6-4 win over the Capitals. Evandro Teixeira (2 goals), Jeffrey Herron (1 goal), Nick Mastrogiacomo (1 goal), Sam Mastrogiacomo (1 goal) and Jake Mastrogiacomo (1 goal) led the Canadiens while the Capitals were led by Jack O’Sullivan (2 goals), Alex Finfer (1 goal) and Emoni Vicente (1 goal). Congratulations to the Sabres, Oilers, Blues and Canadiens on their respective division championships. Next up for the Intramural sports program will be the Winter Basketball program. We will offer divisions for 11 & under Boys Low Rim (Thursdays), 12 & under Girls Low Rim (Fridays) and 14 & under Co-ed (Saturdays). In addition, there will be a Clinic program for 6-8 year olds (Saturdays) and for any players in the Low Rim Leagues (Saturdays). The Club will also host 4 teams in the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. Basketball program who will compete against Boys and Girls Clubs from across the region.
