Safe Summer Streets Basketball League Begins
The 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League began play this past week with games held over four nights. The league is part of the Safe Summer Streets program which expands our operating hours into the evening for our teen members.

On Wednesday the first of two games opened play in the 8-team Senior Boys division with the Cape Ryders, behind the offense of Francis DePina (18) and Kaylab Silva (15) defeating the Rat Pack 64-58. The Rat Pack were led by Joao Fernandes (23) and Bernard Barbosa (17). In the late game Run & Gun bested Lights Out 68-65. Run & Gun was led by Nick Simpson (33) while Lights Out was led by the duo of Daquan Hardy (22) and Rayshaw Matthews (20).

On Thursday night the opener saw Showtime defeat the Bullets 88-52. Philip Lodge (25) led Showtime while Rafael Garcia (11) led the Bullets. In the second game Duke defeated the Young Gunners in the opener for the 4-team Intermediate Boys division, 70-32. Steve Karlberg (18) and Maxwell Spinola (8) led Duke and the Young Gunners respectively. In the late game it was the Tsunami taking down the Rat Pack 59-48. Steven Karlberg (13) and Dave Harrison (12) led the Tsunami attack while Trey Moon (20) led the way for the Rat Pack.

On Friday evening three games were held with the opener seeing the Cape Ryders getting by the Bullets 67-49. Tyrik Jackson (28) led the Cape Ryders while Jordan Williams (14) led the Bullets. In the second game Run & Gun continued their winning ways with a 73-67 win over the Tsunami. Run & Gun was led by the combination of Tyrell Pugh (16) and Nick Simpson (16) while the Tsunami were led by Connor Deegan (28). In Friday’s late game it was Duke defeating the Young Gunners 54-47. T.J. Vasquez (20) led Duke while the Young Gunners were led by Maxwell Spinola (15) and Jordan Rose (9).

On Saturday evening four more games were held to close out the week. In the opener the Bullets defeated A.D.S.L. 66-62. Jordan Williams (23) led the Bullets while A.D.S.L. was led by Ricky Smith (26) and Tristan Mullin (17). In the second game the Bombers, behind Francis DePina (32), edged out the Young Gunners 54-49. Jerry Lopes (14) and Maxwell Spinola (14) headed the Bombers offense. In the third game the Cape Ryders finished strong to defeat Run & Gun 76-71. Tyrik Jackson (25) and Kaylab Silva (20) paced the Cape Ryders offense while Run & Gun was led by the trio of Nick Simpson (21), Paul Lewis (20) and David Turner (20). In the final game of the week it was Showtime taking down Lights Out 75-64. Dean Lee (28) led Showtime while Daquan Hardy (23) led Showtime.

Regular season games, including the 4-team Girls division which will begin this week, will continue weekday evenings through early August followed by the play-off tournament. For information please contact Athletic Director, Bruce Seals at ext. 2210.

Summer Program – Session 2

The first of our two sessions being offered this summer for members ages 6 to 12 will conclude this Friday, July 22 with an Olympics Day. In addition to a variety of team events in all program areas there will be a demonstration put on by the M.B.T.A. Police.

The second session, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 25, will include half-day sessions for our Bantam members (ages 6 & 7) with a morning group from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and an afternoon group from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. The program for members ages 8 to 12 will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both programs operate on a Monday to Friday schedule and are offered free of charge to those with an active Club membership. Please note that participants must be pre-registered and there are only limited spots remaining.

Throughout the program day members are exposed to all of our core program areas including athletics, aquatics, music, education, arts, social recreation and outdoor activities. In addition, for those members interested, we will be offering breakfast each morning at 9 a.m. and afternoon lunch at 1 p.m. through our Patriot’s Kids Café program in partnership with The Greater Boston Food Bank. Throughout the three-week session there will be special events such as field trips to Starland, the Children’s Museum, Puppet Showplace Theater, Canobie Lake Park and Codzilla Boat Tours as well as special events such as: a Clinic with the Metro Lacrosse program; a visit from the Curious Creatures program; a Tile Art Workshop with the Recycle Center; a second visit with the S.M.I.L.E. Initiative Dental Health Services program; the weekly M.G.A. Links program Golf Clinics in Norton, MA; the week-long, off-site, Junior Police Academy; and the second week of the M.Y.S.A. Soccer Clinic. The second session will also close with an Olympics Day event on Aug. 12.
